What is bismuth?

Bismuth is a highly dense, shiny, silver-white metal whose primary applications are in medicines (antibacterials) and cosmetics (pigments).

Given its non-toxic nature and impressive density, bismuth is an environmentally friendly alternative to lead in various applications, including radiation shielding for medical scans, fishing sinkers and ammunition.

However, because of its rarity (nine times rarer than silver) and unique qualities, bismuth is a relatively expensive metal.

Bismuth crystals

Bismuth’s properties also make it an excellent material for crystal growth. Under the right conditions, bismuth crystals can be grown in liquid bismuth (above 271.4 degrees Celcius).

These crystals naturally grow in an angular pattern, with faster growth at the ends compared to the base, causing them to take on a distinct inverted pyramid shape.

They exhibit a range of rich colours which result from the formation of an oxidation layer on the metal’s surface during cooling.

The thickness of this layer determines which colours are reflected. Just like snowflakes, every bismuth crystal is unique.

They are one-of-a-kind and cannot be replicated.
